Athens: A solo adventure ❤️

Well hello to you my reader chums! The Monday just gone, I embarked on a solo trip to Athens in Greece for a few days, to visit my family. Travelling has become an obsession of mine, I love nothing more than planning the next adventure, booking flights and heading away, delving into a new culture. This time was a bit different, I usually travel with my friends however I had to fly on my own, something that made me extremely anxious. I'm proud to say, I did it, anxious Della managed to travel to Athens and back, enjoying quality time with her aunt and cousins, a statement I'd never thought I would make.

Plane travel must have essentials

On Monday, I arrived at Gatwick around 4am, ready for my early 6am flight. As I was only bringing hand luggage, I went straight through security, bought a Pret breakfast and chilled until my gate number was called. I then hopped on the plane and was up in the air before I knew it. Being so early in the morning, sleep took over and I tried to get a few hours in before arriving in Athens around 11.45am Greek time.

For the first day, it was incredibly chilled, taking a drive around the area with my aunt, cousins and spending that special time, catching up over a glass of wine.

Athens flea market

Tuesday, my aunt and I hopped on the train, travelling down to main city centre of Athens. I hadn't been here in a few years since visiting last when I was about 13 years old! We had a browse around the flea market area, buying gifts for friends, family, admiring the sites and absorbing the heart-warming ambience.

Fresh pommegrante juice at Athens flea market

Taking a break, we stopped off for a beverage and I opted for fresh pomegranate juice! It was the most incredible juice I've tasted, a hundred times better to what we get in the UK. Usually pomegranate is bitter to me, but the fresh kind was sweet and refreshing, I loved it.

Athens city centre

Nearby to the Acropolis which you can see in the distance was the Library of Hadrian's remains. We took a gander around, soaking up the historic evidence that lay beneath us. Surrounded by colourful houses and blooming plants, the contrast of time is impeccable to experience.

Nutella and Stracciatella ice cream in Athens

Time for an ice cream pitstop! I chose a blend of my favourite flavours Nutella and Stracciatella with a drizzle of more Nutella on the top; dessert heaven at its finest.

Monastiraki Square church

Next to the flea market and bustling shops sits the famous Monastiraki Square, known for one of Athen's largest monasteries. Now, however most of the monastery is demolished, aside from the small church still standing. I love visiting churches so we took a little look inside, lighting a candle for our loved ones.

Athens city centre

The city centre of Athens is stunning with tucked away restaurants, cafes, shops and market sellers at every turn. It's a welcoming location filled with historical significance, colourful buildings and budding nature; a place suited for every walk of life. I'd happily go back over and over again!

Sunset views from the village.

One of the days, my cousin and I headed to a shopping mall buying a few sneaky treats in Sephora then took a browse around one of the nearby towns. Every corner is designed with so much character; cute lampposts, detailed tiling and sensational architecture, never fails to amaze me.

Kalamos beach, Attica

The weather was very spring like on my trip, so on Thursday my aunt and I took a trip down to the nearby beach area, Kalamos, Attica. There's no place I love better than the beach, growing up with the seaside on my doorstep. Kalamos, holds so much beauty; the rippling clear waters, pebbly beach and charismatic harbour, nestled by the mountainous lands that lay ahead was enough to blow me away. The best way to describe it is by peacefulness of the entire location. We took a walk around then stopped for a hot drink, enjoying a good old fashioned natter.

The trip as a whole was a truly relaxing and eye opening break away. I stepped out my comfort zone, conquering many of my fears travelling alone, spent some quality time with my family and witnessed many beautiful sights. I wish I could go back right now!

I hope you enjoyed this little insight into my trip to Athens. Have you ever visited?

The Rome Diaries ❤️

Well hello to you my reader chums!

Stunning sights, gelato galore, scrumptious dishes, historic significance and heart warming culture, what an exceptional city Rome is! Ever since I can remember, I've always dreamt of visiting the Italian lands, delving into the history, tasting their delicious culinary wonders and soaking up the cosy character it holds.

Last week, my twin sister Maria and I ventured out onto our Rome adventure and discovered all the hidden beauties, here's what we got up to:

Wednesday 17th August - Day 1:

After a stay in an airport hotel, we left around 4.00am for our 6.40am flight from London Gatwick to Rome. Upon arrival in Rome for 10.10am, our transfer took us to our hotel, Gregorio VII Luxury Suites and we were so amazed with its contemporary flair. Prior to the trip, I booked us 'skip the line' tickets for the Vatican at 2pm. We then freshened up and were ready for the Vatican City!

Once collecting our tickets, we took our time walking around the numerous astounding Vatican museums, including the awe inspiring Sistine Chapel and Raphael rooms. I was utterly impressed with the intricate detail on all the ceiling artwork, religious paintings and many artefacts we discovered; too incredible for words.

St Peters Basillica entrance

After the Vatican Museums, we made our way back to the remarkable St Peters Square and took a few photos at the location! I was blown away by the vast size and the striking buildings its surrounded with. My favourite part was St Peters Basilica, the church found in this square - As soon as we entered, I was mesmerised with its high ceilings, detailed artwork, statues and magnificent interior; the whole church is stunning. No picture is able to justify the beauty, it's one of those places in life where you're at awe with everything you're witnessing.

The first day meant our first taste of the scrumptious Italian cuisine. Half way through our sight seeing, we popped into a gelato shop and tasted the esteemed Italian ice cream; it certainly didn't disappoint. Once walking round every aspect of the Vatican we wished to see, we found a nearby restaurant and enjoyed our first meal; spaghetti Bolognese, veggie pizza and bread; absolutely charming.

Thursday 18th August - Day 2:

The second day was when we explored the main centre of Rome, visiting the likes of the Colloseum, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and Parthenon; my favourite day of the three. On that morning we hoped on a bus from our hotel to Piazza Venezia, one of Rome's main city areas. We found a breakfast eatery and enjoyed a couple of delicious pastries before looking around the area. Our first stop was Altar of the Fatherland, a distinctive palace like structure which stands in the middle of the square.

We had a good old venture around, taking pictures and admiring the surrounding views from the highest points!

Then, it was time to visit the incredible Colloseum, a sight I've wanted to see for the longest time! We got our tickets and walked on over - I couldn't believe my eyes when the significant structure stood in front of me; it was captivating. I loved looking around and learning about the history behind such a renowned location.

Arch of Costantinus

Next to the Colosseum was the Arch of Constantine, the largest Roman triumphal arch. Initially it reminded me of the Arc de Triomphe in France and a similar version I saw when visiting Barcelona. Nevertheless, the sight was wonderful and what truly amazes me is how well the structure has been preserved over time. Afterwards, we went for a spot of late lunch and I tasted my first ever authentic Italian lasagne! Safe to say the dish was gone in 10 minutes, I enjoyed it that much.

Trevi fountain

Aside from the Colloseum, one of my other favourite spots had to be the Trevi Fountain. When I first laid my eyes on the sensational structure, I couldn't believe it. Despite the mass of tourists, the pouring water sound echoed, creating a calm vibe in this location; it was stunning. We returned here quite a few times afterwards as we both loved it so much. To keep with tradition, we threw a coin in and made a wish (fingers crossed if it comes true.)

Piazza Navona

Another area I wanted to visit beforehand was Piazza Navona as I'd read many beautiful things. The calm yet heart warming buzz in the air, cosy eateries, stalls and astounding architecture made for a delightful evening location. We stopped for dinner here in a classic Italian eatery where I opted for the most yummy pizza! I actually ate the entire thing and we even went for gelato afterwards, the best way to complete a sightseeing day.

Pantheon

On our nightly stroll back to the bus, we came across the Pantheon! It looked gorgeous under the night sky with the surrounding outdoor lights shining through. We found out on our birthday, 21st June aka the summer solstice, an event is put on where the change of the sun gives a beautiful light show through the Pantheon.

Friday 19th August - Day 3:

For our third and final day, we aimed to do a little bit of shopping, soak up the last bit of sightseeing we hadn't done and taste our final heavenly dishes. We bought tickets for a hop on hop off bus tour, to take us round the entire city and explain all about Rome's fine history! It was an opportunity for us to absorb a last look at the entire location and get off at points we weren't able to see yet.

Spanish steps

One of the spots I'd been dying to see was the famous Spanish Steps, located in Piazza di Spagna, an area filled with high end stores and amazing buildings. I'm glad we were able to finally come across this beauty because in person the Spanish Steps and square look even more magnificent.

Circo Massimo

Another part we hadn't visited was Circus Maximus, an ancient Roman chariot stadium. The bus stopped off here so we were able to admire the historic site from afar.

Al Picchio restaurant in Rome

For our last supper, we discovered a hidden gem of a restaurant, tucked away by the Trevi Fountain. Al Picchio had been running since the 1930s and served up the tastiest food I've ever had, I would highly recommend!! We shared bruschetta and mozerella balls for starters and I chose pesto pasta for mains. I can't even describe to you how moreish this dish was; absolute heaven. I wish pesto pasta tasted that scrummy in England!

Nutella and cinammon gelato

On our final day we had gelato twice ( I mean when in Rome..), the first was in a little gelaterria nestled away from the hustle and bustle of the Trevi Fountain. I got Nutella and Cinnamon; it was truly the best ice cream I'd had on the entire trip ( pictured above). We also had more gelato after our last supper in a place located right next to the Trevi Fountain, bon appetite!

Saturday 20th August - Day 4:

Ciao Roma - It was time for our 6am flight to the English soils once more, here's to our next adventure!

Flying home

I hope you enjoyed an overlook of our Rome trip! Have you ever visited?

London exploring and James Bay concert ❤️

Well hello to you my reader chums! On the Thursday just gone, 31st March to be precise Chloe and I headed to London for a fun filled day out. Several months before, we were lucky to get tickets for James Bay's tour in Hammersmith Apollo London and couldn't wait for the day to finally come long.

Best friends in Hyde Park

Since the concert wasn't till the evening, we headed up around lunchtime and made a complete day of it! Starting off in Covent Garden, we had a browse around the markets, shops and ate a scrummy lunch in Morelli's - they made the largest, most delicious milkshakes ever! Afterwards, we headed over to Hyde Park which for some reason, we've both never visited before. It was a stunning location filled with immaculate greens, a lovely lake and an overall picturesque, London vibe. We spent a while here, taking some OOTDs, selfies and enjoying a good old chat about our next adventures we'd love to embark on; utter bliss.

After a good old wander and explore, we headed over to Hammersmith to get a spot of dinner before James Bay began. To our surprise there wasn't many restaurants in Hammersmith until we found the little gem of Bill's tucked away. I've been wanting to try out Bills for a very long time after seeing many youtubers and bloggers rave about it! Safe to say it didn't disappoint at all - we went all out an opted for a three course meal. I had sweet chili chicken wings for starters, a halloumi burger for mains ( the best burger I've ever tasted) and sundae for dessert. I would 100% recommend going even if it's to just taste the halloumi burger ( I want another)!

Then it was concert time! With the moment finally arriving, we were extremely excited to say the least. Doors opened at 7 and the opening act came on around 8ish - she had the coolest vibe about her! After much deliberation, at 9 James finally hit the stage and the crowd went wild! It was incredible watching some of my favourite songs live; his voice was even more heavenly in person.

James Bay tour, Hammersmith Apollo London

All of his songs live were out of this world however my highlights had to be Running, Let it Go, Best Fake Smile, Get Out While We Can and of course Hold Back the River, the classic. The most memorable moment had to be when the first few notes of Let it Go (my top song) played; everyone got up and sung along - it was magical.

I always think how amazing it must be for the artist when a crowd of thousands sing their own songs back to them - too emotional. Words they've written, people fell in love with, go and buy tickets to see them live, to sing those words back to them - just magical.

James put on a complete stunner of a show and I feel so lucky to of seen him live after listening to his album continuously for months on end. I have to admit, I've now got the concert blues and would love to go back to one asap. I keep watching the videos I took of the day and thinking back to the electric atmosphere, there's just nothing else like it.

I had the best day. Exploring various bits of London, eating like queens, enjoying heart warming chats and a surreal concert experience with my best friend, I couldn't wish for anything more.

I hope you enjoyed this lifestyle post and a insight into my day in London with my best friend Chloe. Have you seen James Bay live? What was your last concert you saw?
