As many of you know thrillers, especially crime thrillers are my thing and when I was recommended this book on my trip to Bath, I couldn't wait to read it. I actually ended up reading it in only a few sittings as I couldn't get enough of the hard-hitting plot.

If you enjoy a crime thriller and an honest, first-person perspective, here's my full review of The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean.

Plotline

Set on an isolated farm in the UK, a woman is trapped by the monster who kidnapped her over seven years ago. The everyday motions she goes through and the punishment he gives her if she doesn't obey his every order. He films her every single move meaning that when he's away from the house, he knows what she's up to. When she discovers she's pregnant, she strives to protect her child no matter the cost and begins planning an escape away from him. In the meantime, another woman is kidnapped into the farm and it's down to her to escape with the woman and her child - but will she save them all?

Characters and relationships

Told from the perspective of 'Jane', the name her kidnapper gives her, I really came to grips with her raw feelings, the everyday emotions and what she has been through. The rules of the land she has to live, the pain she feels, the abuse she tolerates and the punishment she endures. It's an honest and heartbreaking account to hear the trials she deals with every day by this monster.

'Jane's' relationship with her monster is honestly hard to describe or write as at times I could feel her pain and desperation for how he treated her. It made me so angry to see a human treat another human being in that way like they were absolutely nothing.

'Jane's' relationship with her child, however, is the most beautiful thing to read. It really does show the power a mother's love will have to protect their child and sacrifice everything to do just that. The love she shows for her daughter broke my heart in every way as I wanted to leap onto the page and help her out.

Overall thoughts

Overall this book is an intense page-turner and one which is impossible to put down. I could have easily read the entire book in one sitting as I desperately wanted to know she gets out and ends up okay. It's a gripping book, a psychological thriller showing the rawness of humanity and the desperate things people will do when they're truly suffering.

It's a book highlighting the awful truth of what happens to victims of human trafficking and the abuse they endure every single day. Even though this story is fiction, I know it's based on many of the real stories of people who are kidnapped, trafficked and abused. If you read it, expect that sense of desperation in the words of 'Jane', the fear factor on every page and feeling every kind of awful emotion as you make your way through the story.

Ending

Like always, I won't give away the ending and honestly, with this book, I wasn't sure which way it was going to go. I sat in hope throughout the entire book as I wished for a happy and content ending. Luckily, the ending is positive and hopeful, everything this novel needs.

I hope you've enjoyed this post. What's next on your TBR?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-89365666969820995312024-03-11T12:50:00.000-07:002024-03-11T12:52:44.750-07:00Exploring the wonders of Bath: 3-day guide
Well hello to you my reader chums! Travelling around England and the rest of the UK and seeing more of what's on my doorstep has become a goal of mine, as I'm usually travelling abroad. Bath is a city that has been on my must-see list for a while and my partner and I decided to book a long weekend there so I could see what it was all about.

If you fancy a trip to Bath and want some personal insight, here's my 3-guide to Bath and everything I got up to.

Day one - Getting to know the city

Brunch at The Courtyard Café

When I arrived in Bath, the first thing on my list was grabbing something to eat (after a long drive) and through recommendation, I went to The Courtyard Café, tucked away down a quaint road. This café was cute, the best way to describe it with a tiny, homely feel and reflective ceiling. They also had an outdoor dining space but it was too cold. I loved it here because of their cheesy crumpets - such a moreish and wholesome dish to set us up for the day.

Visit The Roman Baths

The biggest and renowned tourist site in Bath is undoubtedly the Roman Baths and you can't go to the city without a visit here. Tickets cost around £20 each for adults (depending on the day you go) and I'd advise booking in advance. It wasn't too busy when we went all things considering but for a Friday in January, busier than I would expect. Seeing the Baths in person was such a fascinating and insightful experience and I love roaming around, listening to the history on the free audio guide. You could easily spend one to two hours here, depending on how much detail you'd like to learn.

Afternoon snack at Mrs Potts Chocolate House

I'm chocolate obsessed and when I saw the Mrs Potts Chocolate House on TikTok, I made sure to give it a visit (twice) during my time in the city. On the first occasion, I tried their delicious and rich 'Matilda' chocolate cake and it tasted like heaven (giving me a sugar high for sure). I absolutely loved it and because of that made sure on day two, I tried their hot chocolate to take around in the city.

Mooch in Toppings and Company Booksellers

I'm a bookworm and one of the things I adored about Bath was their gorgeous bookshop scene. The most famous that I saw wherever I researched was the Toppings and Company Booksellers. This place was like a maze for books and there were too many to look at but I loved the variety and how busy it was - it makes my heart happy to see many people invested in the book world.

Get your city bearings

As Bath is such a beautiful city with typical traditional architecture, it's wonderful to take a walk around and gain your bearings around the city. Whether you love boutique shopping or admiring the architecture, taking a walk around allows you to get your city bearings and know your way around.

Visit Pulteney Bridge

When mooching, you'll probably come across Pulteney Bridge and I would take some time to admire it in all its glory and take a wander along the river and across the bridge itself.

Dinner at The Hope and Anchor

Bath boasts a diverse range of restaurants, from classic British pub grub to pizzerias or Thai restaurants that it can seem impossible to know where to dine. We were staying slightly out of the city in a nearby village and had dinner at The Hope and Anchor. This pub is slightly upmarket with a delicious menu and cosy vibe.

Day two - Exploring the sights

Visit Bath Abbey

On the second day in Bath, you'll have more of an idea of where everything is and delve more into other gorgeous sights, such as the Bath Abbey. I walked past the Abbey plenty of times on the first day but only went inside it on the second day. I'm obsessed with churches and Bath Abbey was certainly unique and glorious to admire. Tickets cost £7.50 each for adults and you can buy in there but if you're visiting during a busy time, I'd suggest buying them in advance.

Wander in Mrs B's Emporium

This bookshop has to be one of my favourites ever and I came home with a stack of books from it. Like Toppings and Company booksellers, it was a maze of endless book varieties with a quirky interior. But the best part was the staff were all trained to give personal recommendations based on genres and authors you like. I told them how I adore thrillers, murder mysteries and a list of authors I read a lot of and they recommended so many apt books I've not heard of but were right up my street.

Visit The Circus and The Royal Crescent

You can channel your inner Bridgeton with a visit to The Circus and The Royal Crescent. Both are quite near each other and are free to roam around and get that much-needed photo. I loved walking around these sights because they made me feel a little royal and fancy. I'm pretty sure you can also go on a Bridgeton tour and they'll show you the houses/streets used in the series.

Go to Bath Artisan Market

I'm a market girlie and love roaming around markets wherever I am, including Bath. The Bath Artisan Market was a local paradise with fresh produce, crafts and second-hand books. You can easily spend a while here walking around and finding some gems to take home as souvenirs.

Try the classic buns at Sally Lunn's

Bath is known for the 'Bath Buns' and at Sally Lunn's, you'll have the complete traditional experience, trying a bun (sweet or savoury), in a quintessentially British café. I loved Sally Lunn's as not only are you enjoying a delicious treat but knowing there is a lot of history in the building makes the experience even more authentic.

Eat gelato at Swoon Gelato

When I'm on holiday, ice cream is a must and I couldn't resist trying the gelato on offer here, even if it was January! Swoon Gelato had an authentic feel to it with an array of delicious flavours to offer - I had the hazelnut and adored every bite.

Play games at Thirsty Meeples

My partner loves board games and he found a board game café right in the centre of the city. We decided to book and spend a few hours playing games and honestly, I loved the energy here. Everyone was enjoying their games, the staff were fab at recommendations and the café offered various foods from cakes to cool alternatives of fizzy drinks.

Dinner at The Circus Restaurant

I wanted to try out one of the higher-end restaurants in Bath as the weekend we went was also our anniversary and we wanted to celebrate with a lovely dinner. The Circus Restaurant blew my taste buds away. Their menu was small but well-thought-out with a variety of dishes for the different palates. I'm still salivating over the starter, main and dessert.

Day three: Visit sights nearby

Go to Prior Park Landscape Garden

You can easily spend more time in the city on the last day, soaking up more of the shops, endless museums and cafes, or head out of the centre to one of the nearest National Trust sights, Prior Park Landscape Garden. Tickets are around £8 and there is no parking onsite, yet you can easily get a bus from the centre or park on one of the local streets nearby. Prior Park is a breath of fresh air from city life. The endless greenery makes for an impressive nature walk around. Plus, the main bridge and buildings are superb to admire as you soak up the open space.

Head over to Castle Coombe

Bath is near the Cotswolds, around half an hour (depending on which part you visit). With such close distance, I'd recommend spending your last afternoon heading over to the Cotswolds. We went to Castle Coombe, a small village in the Cotswolds which is stunning but exceptionally small and we only ended up needing 2 hours here. I would say come and see Castle Coombe as it is charming and what I'd picture the Cotswolds to be but there are also many other spots in the Cotswolds you can venture to.

I hope you enjoyed this post. When are you planning your trip?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-62158046069956346782024-03-03T13:31:00.000-08:002024-03-11T13:01:32.610-07:00How to maintain a long-distance friendship
Well hello to you my reader chums! As an adult maintaining friendships can be challenging as many people can be busy with other commitments. Adding long distance to that can make maintaining friendships even more difficult. One of my closest friends has lived in another country across the world for nearly six years now and at times, it has been hard, yet, our friendship is still strong and I'm grateful to have our connection.

If your friend has moved away or you're struggling with distance in a friendship, here are my tips on how to maintain a long-distance friendship.

Schedule call and face time dates

The most practical way to stay in touch with someone, not in the same country or time zone is to schedule time in to spend and chat with each other. Whether it's a phone call, Face Time or Zoom call, having that regular time with them in the diary will guarantee a catch-up. In the same way, you have catch-ups with your friends who live in the town at coffee shops, do the same virtually. Grab a drink and get comfy as you have a good old chinwag.

Text or voice note them as much as possible

Texting and voice notes are the quickest way to communicate with someone, especially a friend in a different location. If they aren't available to answer your call there and then, a text or voice note will give you the chance to share your thoughts with them and wait for them to respond when they get a spare moment. I find when I don't have time in a week for a call, I can still stay connected by sending a quick text or voice note here and there.

Show them love on social media

Being your friend's hype person can be challenging when you are miles apart, but this is where the power of social media can come in. Whether they post something they're doing or have a business venture, give all the support through likes, comments and messaging. It can remind them you're still there for them even miles apart.

Include them in group chats

I feel like as an adult, the best way to communicate with multiple people is through group chats. Ensure your long-distance pal is included in the relevant chats as it can help them stay in the loop with the everyday things going on, and gives them another level of connection.

Organise to meet up when they're in the same country as you

It may be once a year or twice a year but whenever they're in the same country as you, organise a meetup. This could be a coffee, a simple walk, dinner out or an activity you enjoy together. Whatever the occasion, any form of quality time will help keep that connection alive.

Send out cards on birthdays and special occasions

Special occasions are a wonderful reminder of the important people you have in your life. If someone's in a different country, it can be expensive to send a physical gift or organise to do something for their birthday. Due to this, a card is a happy medium as it shows you've remembered and thought of them, a simple gesture of love.

Arrange to go see each other

Again, this is down to your personal circumstances. But when you're able to, see if you can organise a trip to see each other, whether it's once a year or every few months. Flying out (or driving) to see them can mean the world and give you dedicated time to spend with one another.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Where in the world does your friend live?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-50228275726601838882024-02-28T03:58:00.000-08:002024-02-28T03:58:00.361-08:003-week itinerary to Indonesia
Well hello to you my reader chums! Indonesia is a country that was full of surprises and I adored every minute of travelling around the country for three weeks. With its level of diversity from the countryside, islands, and cities to religious significance, there's plenty to see and learn. I'd happily jet off to Indonesia again and explore more of the island scene, its history and sights.

If you're planning a long trip to Indonesia and want to explore a diverse range of locations, here's my 3-week itinerary to Indonesia.

1/2 nights in Bali/ Nusa Lembongan

Any trip to Indonesia begins with Bali and this itinerary is no different. I flew into Bali and wanted to explore the other islands around it as well as the island itself. If you're coming from the UK it can be a long flight, whereas I was coming from the Philippines as part of my backpacking trip. I landed in Bali, late in the night and stayed in a hotel close by to the main airport. The next morning, I took a boat to one of the tiny islands Nusa Lembongan and spent the night there.

Nusa Lembongan is a tiny island, yet the perfect place to soak up a taste of chilled island life, eat smoothie bowls, cycle around and see famous landmarks such as the Devil's Tears. It's a great base to start your time out in Indonesia as you can relax and ease yourself in for three weeks around the gorgeous country. Nusa Lembongan is also a popular day trip from eastern Bali as it's only a half-hour boat ride away.

3/4 nights in Ubud, Bali

Get the boat back from Nusa Lembongan to Bali, hire a taxi, and head up to Ubud. Ubud has to be my favourite part of Bali because it has that hipster, quirky appeal with DELICIOUS food places and endless things to see and do. 3-4 days is a good amount of time to see the main sights, slowly travel around, soak up the vibe and hit up the many restaurants. Like any place, you're more than welcome to spend longer in Ubud if you fall in love with it - I could have happily done so.

Ubud features the Monkey Forest, rice terraces, plenty of nature walks, markets and many historic temples you'll fall in love with. It's a place that just keeps on giving and has that familiar sense to it you'll fall in love with.

2/3 days in the Gili Islands OR stay in Bali

My plan altered when I was travelling due to Silent Day in Bali where everything shuts down on the island and I decided to visit the Gili Islands first before roaming around the rest of Bali. I have to admit I wasn't the biggest fan of the Gili Islands because it was overcrowded and overhyped and the damage to the reefs was pretty apparent. Despite that, I only properly saw Gili T and don't want to make assumptions about Gili Meno and Gili Air as people rave about those two islands more.

If you choose to visit the islands, 2-3 days is a great amount of time to lap up the beaches, go on a snorkelling tour, eat delicious brunches and spend as much time possible in the water. It's up to you which of the three islands you stay on and which you visit, depending on what you want to do.

Alternatively, if you want to spend longer in Bali, it's an opportunity to choose one of the other areas to visit, such as Seminyak, Canggu or Kuta, depending on what you're looking to see during your time here.

3 nights in Uluwatu, Bali

Whether you're heading back from the Gili Islands or continuing time in Bali, I'd recommend the area of Uluwatu for 3 days. I loved this area of Bali as it had a gorgeous beach scene, the surfer appeal and restaurant heaven. 3 nights in Uluwatu allows you to enjoy the wonders of Bali's beaches, visit the Uluwatu temple and soak up the sunshine.

2 nights in Labuan Bajo/Komodo Island

Saying goodbye to Bali is always a sad moment as I could easily spend more time on the island, however, it's your chance to see more of Indonesia. From Bali, fly to Labuan Bajo in preparation to do the Komodo Island tour. Komodo Island has to be one of my favourite experiences in Indonesia and a must-visit. You can do tours that span from a day to several nights long, depending on your budget and what you'd like to see. I flew into Labuan Bajo because many of the day tours begin there and 2 nights gave us a chance to rest up before the long tour, enjoy the tour and rest up that night before you explore more of Indonesia.

2 nights in Malang

The next stop is heading over to Malang and whatever way you can go about it can be long. In hindsight, I wish I had done an internal flight rather than flying back to Bali and getting an 11-hour car ride to Malang (which ended up being 18 hours long). Like Labuan Bajo, I headed to Malang for a tour of the incredible Mount Bromo. I'm happy I booked 2 nights here because it gave me a chance to rest up before the midnight start of the tour and revel in the beauty of it. There's not loads else to Malang, however, you can visit the Jodipan village and embrace the local life of the city. I found Malang to be one of the cheapest places to eat in all of Indonesia.

4 nights in Yogykarta

Yogyakarta is the last stop on the trip before jetting home and a city I absolutely adored in many ways. As your last stop, 4 days is a solid amount of time to make yourself at home, see the sights, travel here and eat all the delicious food. The train journey from Malang to Yogyakarta is around 6 hours long and an easy route.

Yogyakarta is renowned for the Prambanan temple, Malioboro Street, the art scene, and markets and has a cool vibe to it. I could have easily spent more time here because it's such an easy city to exist in and slowly travel around, and enjoy the best sights.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Running a business is hard work and can be constant so it's a challenging thing to switch off. Whether thinking about your workload, money, networking or how to grow, being a business owner is constantly on my mind. Mental health is a priority to me as taking care of my mind, helps me feel more fulfilled, work productively and appreciate the business growth.

If you're a business owner and need advice about your mental health, here are my tips on caring for your mental health as a business owner.

Set a schedule

I love organisation as it keeps my anxiety at bay and helps me understand my expectations for the day and week. Setting a schedule is vital in planning out your workload, whether you're a freelance marketing specialist like me or a photographer. I find it helps to book slots across the week and month for my retainers and block out time for projects, networking, admin and my own marketing. Then, I know what free time I have to take breaks, run errands and book in social plans.

Book in regular breaks

If you work all the time, you'll be burnt out and you won't work as productively. Booking in breaks allows your mind and body to rest, refresh and take care of you. When you've taken a break, you can start the day with fresh eyes, with a new perspective and motivation to work. Breaks can mean an hour in your day, an afternoon off every week, a week off here and there or even a sabbatical. Whatever break you need, make sure it's regular enough to help your mind.

Keep social personally and professionally

Socialising can really help your mental health, especially when you're feeling low. Whether it's a friend, family or your partner, booking time with those who love you can boost you up, help you relax and enjoy your favourite things about life. It's also important to stay social professionally because it helps you connect with people on the same path as you and can also help build more opportunities.

Get out and about every day

You've probably heard it a million times but fresh air and exercise really are the key to a boost in your day. Whether it's only for ten minutes or for an hour, getting out and about will help you step away from the screen or focus on work. I love to take a stroll along the beach, through the town or any open spaces.

Create a nurturing lifestyle

Health is the most important thing to care for your mind and a nurturing life will help with that. Choosing the food and exercise which makes you feel good can shape a fulfilling and content every day. I love to start the day with pilates and a breakfast of delicious and filling foods that my body feels good after eating.

Don't overfill your workload

It's easy as a business owner to be constantly working or thinking about work and it makes it tempting to overfill your schedule. However, I'd always recommend not completely booking your schedule, leaving gaps for breaks and socialising. If you fill up your schedule too much, you'll likely burn out or resent your work.

Focus on the positives

I don't know about you but I struggle with the highs and lows as a freelancer because if it's a low period of work, the self-doubt comes in. I think about all the things I haven't done or achieved, rather than focus on everything I've achieved and my journey as a business owner.

I hope you enjoyed this post. What else would you add?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-83199215487247708292024-02-18T14:23:00.000-08:002024-02-18T14:23:02.716-08:00Everything to know before travelling to Indonesia
Well hello to you my reader chums! Indonesia is one of the best countries I've visited and surprised me in exceptional ways. I fell in love with its nature scene, the beaches, the temples, the food and how every day, the sense of adventure, roaming around. I'm in awe of all the incredible experiences I had and cherish all my memories from 3 weeks in the country.

If you're planning a trip to Indonesia, whether it's long or short, here's everything to know before travelling to Indonesia.

The weather is different across the country

When it comes to any trip to Southeast Asia, you need to consider other tropical climates. There's no doubt, it'll always be warm in Indonesia, however, the country does have a dry and wet season. Generally, the dry season is from April to October and the monsoon season, November to March. Although Indonesia is such a large country, the seasons can be different, depending on what part of the country you're in, such as the west is different to the east.

Sort your visa

Depending on where you're from in the world, check what your visa requirements are. As I'm from the UK, I was able to buy my visa to Indonesia on arrival for around £35 which gave me a 30-day entry into the country.

Respect the diverse religions

Indonesia is pretty diverse in terms of religion, however, the majority of the country is Muslim. The country also recognises other religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism. With that in mind, you need to be respectful of the religions, dress modestly in more residential destinations and be wary of how you act.

There's more to Indonesia than Bali

Bali is one of the most popular destinations for backpackers and a large reason why many go to Indonesia. However, I had the pleasure of travelling to Indonesia for 3 weeks, visiting more than just Bali. I fell in love with what was beyond the ultra-tourist path, such as Yogyakarta, Malang, Komodo Island, Nusa Lembongan and the Gili Islands, plus many other places to discover. There's no doubt I still adore every inch of Bali and the surfer, hipster vibe it has with the markets, rice fields, beaches, food and serene atmosphere.

Use Indonesian rupees

The currency in Indonesia is the Indonesian rupee. You can order the currency before you jet off to the country or buy it when you land at the airport. I would say, it's always best to have cash across the country, especially when you're outside of Bali. In Bali and the more popular destinations, you can use your card - but it's always best to have cash with you.

Indonesia is rather cheap (outside of Bali)

I was surprised about how cheap Indonesia was for food, transport and activities when I left Bali. Bali is still cheap but a lot pricier than other destinations in Indonesia, due to the tourist appeal. Some meals I could get for £1 or £2 and they'd be delicious.

Indonesia is massive

I think many travellers go to Indonesia and think of Bali but the country has so much more than meets the eye. As I touched on in my other point, when jetting into Indonesia, ensure you plan more for your trip than island life in Bali. Whether you fancy a taste of the city, visit more off-the-beaten-path locations, learn more about the cuisine or see the quieter beach scene, there are plenty of destinations to choose from.

Travel with an open mind

The best thing about Indonesia is witnessing the natural wonders of its countryside, beaches and meeting the locals and tasting the Indonesian cuisine. The greatest memories come from discovering quaint streets, off-the-path restaurants and new people.

I hope you enjoyed this post. When are you planning to go?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-58318738238021409872024-02-16T08:57:00.000-08:002024-02-16T08:57:55.008-08:00Book review: Magpie by Elizabeth Day
Well hello to you my reader chums! I love a thriller as there's something about a quick-paced plot with suspense that I adore. I heard many people rave about the book Magpie and honestly, I didn't actually realise what it was about until I bought it - and I'm glad I did.

If you love psychological thrillers or a book which will constantly surprise you, here's my book review of Magpie by Elizabeth Day.

Plot

Magpie follows the life of Marissa when she meets Jake and everything falls into place. However, when their new lodger Kae arrives, everything changes. Marissa thinks something isn't right about her because of the way she acts, what she says or that she's constantly asking questions about the baby they're trying for. But maybe it's all in Marissa's head? That's what Jake thinks and she thinks she trusts him. Marissa is determined to discover what is wrong even if it costs her everything.

Characters and relationships

Marissa is the protagonist and the book starts out with her, honestly, I love her as a character at the start as she's painted like a regular woman with insecurities and problems. She talks about her traumatic experiences and past relationships, friends and how she meets Jake. Their relationship in my opinion seems rushed from the beginning and a bit suspicious as if they fell into it all a little quickly and she doesn't really know him or trust him in fact.

Jake seems like a nice and caring guy but as it's told from Marissa's perspective I can't really get a full grasp of him as a character. With Kate, Marissa doesn't seem to like her but in all honesty, it sounds like she's jealous of her and everything she stands for.

It's hard to talk about Jake and Kate in more detail as characters without giving away the plot, however, the more I learnt about the characters, the more who they are shaped up and I started to really dive into the plot.

Overall thoughts

Overall, despite being a little uncertain when the book began, once I got a grasp of what the plot was about, I gained a full perspective of the characters' personalities and how they played a role in the story. I would describe this plot as a psychological thriller, even though at first it sounded more like a dramatic story where Marissa is making out Jake is cheating on her with Kate.

The book covers many themes, such as infertility, pregnancy, mental illness, troubling family dynamics and traumatic experiences. With plenty of problematic issues woven throughout the plot, it adds plenty of depth and suspense - and made me gain another level of appreciation.

The book overall was certainly a page-turner as I was keen to see which way the story turns and the next layer is uncovered. I'd highly recommend it if psychological plots intrigue you.

Ending

I can't give away the ending, however, despite the tragic element of the plot, this book has a content and happy ending, leaving my mind at bay and wrapping everything up in a beautiful way. It also shares how the power of caring for people is the most amazing thing.

I hope you enjoyed this review. Health anxiety isn't something I talk about a lot online, however, I do struggle with it an awful lot and always have. It doesn't help these days with Instagram and TikTok and the many creators talking about their health in full depth, making me think about all the illnesses I could potentially have.

If you have health anxiety or suffer from hypochondria, here are some tips on how to deal with health anxiety.

Don't Google your symptoms

Google is your enemy with health anxiety. As soon as I feel like something it's wrong, I'll jump on Google and search it up and it always brings up the worst possible scenario and suddenly, I think I have a terrible illness and the panic begins. With that in mind, try and prevent the temptation of searching up your symptoms and instead if the issue is really bothering you, call up your doctors and make an appointment.

Avoid scrolling on social media

Lately, social media has been the WORST for my health anxiety. The algorithm just knows me and I end up getting videos popping up of people talking about their health issues, how to improve health or all the million things in the world which are making me ill. Due to this, I try and prevent scrolling on social media as much as I can, especially when my anxiety is high. And, if I notice I'm going down a black internet hole of health videos, I immediately try and stop myself from watching more and more videos. I only follow accounts that boost positivity rather than trigger my mind.

Reassure yourself that is your mind against you

I find this is the hardest thing to do, especially when my mind is spiralling and I can't control my thoughts. However, I have to really be strict with myself and constantly remind myself that it is just my mind spirallling, it's not real, my mind is just being my enemy. If this is you, repeat it as much as you need to or have a list of affirmations prepared at this moment to run through.

Talk to family and friends with your concerns

Health anxiety can be so isolating and you can feel very alone with your thoughts. I always think I sound overdramatic when I'm talking about it but I can assure you, you don't. Your friends and family are there to listen and help reassure you with any concerns you have. Confide in those you feel safe with to express your feelings and tell people how they can help, sometimes it may just be a listening ear.

Put in place coping mechanisms when you feel triggered

Everyone has trigger points and they're different for each person and it's important to learn what yours are as you can put coping mechanisms in place. With that in mind, finding hobbies that spark joy can really help in moments when your mind is spiralling. I love to travel, bake, read, try new restaurants and beach walks. All of these bring a lot of joy and help keep my mind at bay when my health anxiety is triggered.

I hope you enjoyed this post. Indonesia was a country which surprised me in many ways, and the experiences there were some of my favourite out of my 3-month backpacking trip. The country has some of the loveliest people, gorgeous countryside scenery, beautiful sunsets, the best food and the prettiest beaches. Many days I spent exploring, I couldn't believe my eyes at the sheer beauty, especially during certain experiences.

If you're new to Indonesia or planning a trip, here's my guide to the best experiences in Indonesia.

Komodo Island

I have said it a thousand times, but the day trip to Komodo Island must be one of my favourite travel experiences. The trip to Komodo Island wasn't only about seeing the Komodo dragons, it was much more than that. The trip involved visiting Padar Island, the Komodo Island National Park, and Taka Makassar and Manta Point.

The first part of the trip had to be my favourite, hiking up Padar Island. The panoramic view was extraordinary when we made our way to the top. It featured three different beaches, the white beach, the pink beach and the black beach. Plus, with picture-perfect blue skies, the image will never leave my mind. And, snorkelling on these beaches, I witnessed some phenomenal marine life. The trip to the national park was memorable as seeing Komodo dragons up close was pretty scary but amazing! While Taka Makassar is so unique; a stretch of sand in the middle of the ocean - I loved it here!

Snorkelling at Manta Point

This leads me to the Manta Point experience which was one of the last points during the Komodo Island excursion. At this point, we snorkelled and the sea was crystal clear, and not just that, the marine life was beautiful. We actually witnessed manta rays and I was blown away by their size and how mystical they looked - it's as if I was in the Finding Nemo film.

Witnessing the sunrise at Mount Bromo

Watching sunrise and sunset is my favourite thing and witnessing the sunrise over Mout Bromo was something else. We woke up in the early hours for a jeep ride around Bromo Park and waited in the pitch black until the sun rose and it was magical. Every stage looked more beautiful as the sun slowly rose and we could see the colours of the mountains and natural terrain. I loved how after, we got to see the volcanic crater, walk around the national park and experience the natural wonders.

Exploring Ubud

Bali is a hotspot for many travellers and I loved roaming around the island and visiting many locations, including Ubud, which was my favourite place. I loved exploring Ubud; it has a natural and hipster appeal which I fell in love with. I love the local markets, the endless rice fields, the beautiful river strolls and the many ancient temples to mooch around. Ubud is also a hub for quirky restaurants, coffee shops, bars and stores - and I'd love to return again.

Watching Devil's Tear on Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is a tiny island next to Bali and a gorgeous spot to spend a few days relaxing on island life. This island is serene and a great opportunity to cycle around, eat smoothie bowls, and enjoy the natural beauty and the beach scene. And, this island is home to the famous Devil's Tears. The Devil's Tears is a cliff with giant waves and is mesmerising to watch.

Yoga in Bali

Bali is certainly the heart of wellness and despite loving every inch of the island, exploring its beach scene, temples, culture and food, doing a yoga class was on my list. I love practising yoga and doing a class in the sunshine with fellow travellers and my partner was dreamy. The class was in an ideal setting, tranquil and holiday-esque, the perfect place to relax.

Temple hopping in Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta was a complete surprise and I fell in love with the city, especially the temple scene. It reminded me of the Angkor Wat complex in Cambodia with the same level of 'wow' factor. I especially enjoyed walking around the Prambanan temple as it was phenomenal in terms of design and the overall setting.

Eating Nasi Goreng

Indonesian food is beyond delicious and one dish I was obsessed with, the Nasi Goreng. I pretty much ate it most days and it consists of this veggie-type rice with a fried egg. It's mooreish and incredibly inexpensive and I could eat it all the time now.

I hope you enjoyed this post. It's nearly a year since I've been freelancing full-time, and despite enjoying the journey, I can't deny it's difficult, especially in the low periods. Freelancing is a constant learning curve and comes with its lessons and rewards.

One thing difficult about freelancing is the solitude and lack of colleagues you'd have in a regular 9-5 role. If you're a freelancer dealing with loneliness, here are my best tips on coping with that.

Join a local coworking group

I'm grateful that I have a local coworking group in Folkestone as they act as my 'colleagues' which I'd have in a typical 9-5 job. I love my coworking group as they're an incredible community of business owners and remote workers, and generally a bunch of awesome humans. I go to coworking multiple times a week in different cafes and it's a perfect part of my routine, joining others to work with. The best bit of coworking is it doesn't feel like work, it's always fun and we have social nights outside of our 'working' times together, such as pizza-making evenings and cheese nights.

Whatever town or city you're in, coworking groups and cafes are around you, you just need to search for them. If you can't find them, why not start your own? You never know what other business owners and freelancers you'll meet along the way.

Join virtual meetups

A more accessible option is joining virtual meetups. I always see groups on Linkedin for freelancing meetups and coworking sessions together. Whether it's every week or once a month, getting together with groups of people online will immerse you into the freelancer community, allow you to meet others and stay social throughout your week.

Attend networking events

Networking events are the key to putting yourself out there in the freelancing world. It's where I've met clients, potential leads and other freelancers doing similar things to me. Networking has helped me grow my confidence, make friends in the freelancing world and find business. Research which networking events are on in your area and book them at least once a month or how often you see fit for your business.

Book in regular social events with loved ones

Aside from socialising on a work basis, keeping social with loved ones is incredibly important for your mental health. Working alone can be beneficial but also detrimental to your mind and this is why I'd recommend booking regular events. Whether it's having a coffee with a friend, giving a relative a call or attending a club, whatever social events are for you, book them in as much as you can.

Work elsewhere than your home office

Working at home 24/7 isn't great for your flow of creativity or productivity. It's good for you every so often to work in a different environment, whether that's a coffee shop or a co-working space. I love to work in coffee shops with my co-working friends but also independently. There are also plenty of co-working spaces on offer to hire out desks or office spaces to do your work.

Connect with others on LinkedIn and invite them for a virtual coffee

LinkedIn is the best hub for connecting with other freelancers and meeting new people. If you're looking to learn more about people you connect with, invite them for a virtual coffee. It's the perfect opportunity to get to know someone and build a potential contact for collaborations or to recommend other services.

I hope you enjoyed this post. I’m a big fan of thriller, murder-mystery-type novels as I adore endless curiosity and have a need to find out the answers.

I was obsessed with Lucy Foley’s The Hunting Party and when I saw this book, I had to give it a go and it didn’t disappoint! If you’re looking for a new murder mystery, here is my full review of The Guest List by Lucy Foley.

Plotline

Following the perspectives of the bride, the best man, the wedding planner, the bridesmaid, the plus one and the groom, the plot is surrounding a wedding, held on a remote island in Ireland. Guests gather to celebrate the wedding of famous TV star Will and magazine publisher Jules. The wedding has to be perfect in every way and Jules has guaranteed that planning it all to the finest detail. However, as the celebrations begin and alcohol is consumed, gossip is spread, feuds unravel and jealousy rises, then a body is found - it’s not really the perfect day after all.

The book explores the victim and which one of the guests is the killer?

Characters and relationships

The characters in this book were cleverly thought out, especially in how they link to each other’s lives. The number of times I had to gasp when another secret was unveiled!

Bride - I wasn’t a big fan of the bride at all and I think it’s how she was meant to come across. She is a very self-centred character who knows exactly what she wants and will do anything to get it. Due to her past trauma, her level of empathy is pretty low and she walks around with her obvious hatred.

Groom - My least favourite character of them all! At first, he is painted in a gorgeous and exciting light, however, the more I learnt about him, the more my stomach turned and he is the definition of a selfish and misogynistic man.

Bridesmaid - Olivia had to be one of my favourite characters and one to whom my heart went out to her the most. She had been through an awful time and how she explained her pain, was so real and insightful.

Best man - Jonno the best man I did feel sorry for to a degree as he never really fitted in with everyone around him including the groom and his other groomsmen and this is more apparent as I learnt more about his past and trauma.

Plus one - Hannah had to be the rawest, most authentic girl-next-door type of character which is why I loved her. She’s a mum and has that exciting personality about her. At first, I didn’t see why her role is so significant in the plot, but when the extra layer unveils, it’s intense.

Wedding planner - The wedding planner I didn’t pay much attention to but did have a curiosity about as in every chapter she would suggest pain to do with the island and it’s only at the end you understand what and why.

What’s interesting about the relationships overall in this book is how most go wrong as the story develops with lies and deceits revealed, unearthing who people really are.

Overall thoughts

Overall, this book was one of my favourite murder mysteries! The author has a brilliant way of building curiosity and mapping out a clever plot that I can even fathom. The way the character’s past and presents are brought together over the course of a wedding is genius, and who ends up being the culprit is so unexpected! I loved every page of this book.

Ending

I enjoyed the ending! I loved how it wasn’t what I expected and there were even surprises right up to the end.

I hope you enjoyed this review! What’s your favourite murder mystery?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-54665866004714060342024-01-14T12:37:00.000-08:002024-01-14T12:37:39.270-08:00Everything to know before visiting Komodo Island
Well hello to you my reader chums! Visiting Komodo Island in Indonesia was one of my favourite experiences during my backpacking tripl. If anything, it looks like Instagram in real life or the picture-perfect postcard. Komodo Island is more than meets the eye and can only be visited on a booked tour as it's inhabitable.

If you're planning a trip to Komodo Island, here's my complete guide to everything to know before visiting Komodo Island.

You can't stay on Komodo Island

As I mentioned previously, Komodo Island isn't habitable, no locals are living on it and there are no hotels or places to stay. However, this doesn't mean the island isn't accessible, you can easily book in tours and excursions to see all its highlights and natural settings.

It's an expensive excursion to visit

One of the best things about travelling to south-east Asia is how inexpensive excursions, food and accommodation are. However, one thing about Komodo Island is it's rather expensive. I wouldn't say it's too expensive but it's worth keeping in mind when budgeting your trip. My tour cost around £70 for the day and honestly, it was one of the most luxurious trips I've had, considering the quality of the transport, food and itinerary.

Komodo Island has many destination points

I didn't realise the extent of Komodo Island when we planned the trip during our Asia travels. Komodo Island features Padar Island and the Komodo National Park. Padar Island is home to three colourful beaches, pink, white and black with a stunning view when you climb to the top of the viewpoint. The national park is the place to witness komodo dragons in their natural habitat with a guide.

Stay on Labuan Bajo for the tour

You may have noticed I mentioned you can't stay on Komodo Island. However, there's nothing to worry about as many people who visit Komodo, stay in Labuan Bajo, a small fishing town. Not much goes on in this town and there are minimal things to see and places to eat. However, it's a good base as the boat ride to Komodo is only a few hours away and makes the trek a lot easier to see all the sights in one day. There's also the option of an overnight cruise if you want to spend longer seeing the sights but of course, this option is a lot pricier.

You can only see the Komodo dragons in the national park

Komodo dragons are pretty dangerous animals and reside within the national park. When visiting the park, there's no need to be worried as rangers lead and stand behind the group of tourists, ready for any danger. Komodo dragons are scattered across the parks and you may see one or several on your trip. Despite the name Komodo Island, you can only find the animals within the national park.

Padar Island is everything

The whole trip to Komodo Island is mind-blowing, however, Padar Island had to be my favourite part. I'm still not over the jaw-dropping view when I hiked to the viewpoint and saw all three beaches, the pink, white and black beach. The day I visited also had picture-perfect blue sky weather adding to the overall beautiful appeal of the natural landscape. It's also a dream spot for the best snorkelling with some of the most amazing marine life I've ever seen.

Pack for all activities for the trip

The tour around Komodo Island is a combination of all types of activities, hiking, snorkelling, swimming, walking around the national park and enjoying the beach life. With that in mind, you want to be prepared for all activities. Think about the appropriate clothing to wear, suitable for the weather and activities on offer. I wore shorts and a loose top, easy to change into for swimming. I wore walking shoes and didn't bring a shoe for the beach/swimming as I just went barefoot. Other things to consider are layers (weather-dependent), suncream, bug spray and all the hiking essentials.

Enjoy every moment and the natural beauty

I'm still in awe of the natural wonders of Komodo Island and would love to revisit and admire it again. When you're there, after you've taken all the photos, ensure you're present in the moment. Embrace the mountainous terrain, the crystal clear waters and the endless colourful highlights the trip will bring.

Book the tour in advance on Klook

You can book wherever you like, however, I found Klook incredibly useful on my travels across Asia for cheaper and discounted excursions. I think about Vietnam all the time, there's something about that country which makes my heart skip a beat. It is packed with the most moreish cuisine, gorgeous scenery and memorable nature scenes, I dream about returning again and again.

I finally visited Hoi An on my last trip and fell in love with the ancient town. With stunning painted yellow walls, independent shops, quirky food spots and plenty of attractions to see, Hoi An is a must-visit on your trip to Vietnam.

If you're planning a trip to Hoi An, here is my complete guide to what I got up to in 4 days in Hoi An, Vietnam.

Day 1 - Visit the main sights of Hoi An

The Old Town

The Old Town is the heart of Hoi An and what the town is all about, renowned for its ancient look. Mooching around the Old Town is the heart and best thing to do in Hoi An. The town features endless yellow-painted walkways, with charismatic buildings, independent shops and market stalls to roam around. I could spend hours walking around the town and soaking up the gorgeous views and browsing the many handmade items on offer. The scenery is picture-perfect, especially with the bright, colourful river running through it.

Japanese Covered Bridge

Probably one of the most famous sights in the town, it's worth a walk through to see and take a picture. However, be wary, this sight is incredibly busy for all tourists so make sure to come before all the tour groups fill the town.

Thu Bon River - lanterns at night

The postcard picture of Hoi An is the lanterns, lighting up the river at night. This in itself is a sight you need to witness because it's absolutely precious. It's one of those scenes that'll make your heart swell and give you a moment to just be. This sight is something I waited for years to see and I loved it in so many ways. You can go one step further and hire one of the boats, lighting up your own lantern on the river.

Night market

Markets are my favourite thing to mooch around as I love to eat street food and shop for any little trinkets. Hoi An has markets throughout the day but they continue at night and you can treat yourself to a classic Vietnamese dish or hot dessert.

Day 2 - Experience some of the cultural sights of the town and the tailors

Precious Heritage Gallery

This had to be one of my favourite attractions I saw in the town, it was an art gallery which featured beautiful photos of many different Vietnamese tribes, across history. I loved the raw and honest photos as well as the history lessons I learned about all the Vietnamese people. It was incredibly interesting and I happily stayed there for ages.

Local market mooching

Hoi An is a hub for independent sellers, art and quirky gifts; it's the place where I bought quite a few of my souvenirs. The markets are by the bucket load as well as shops to discover hidden gems and mementos you can bring home as a gift for yourself or others. From clothing, jewellery, handbags and souvenirs, you can find the suitable item for you.

Art galleries

Speaking of art, you won't be short of art galleries to explore. The colours are endless with the beautiful different types of art, from classic paintings to more abstract pieces. Whether you're looking to admire or shop, art lovers will adore this town in every way.

Visit a tailors

Getting your clothes tailored in Hoi An is probably the top thing to do and you'll see endless tourists filling the various tailors. The tailors are incredibly popular as they're known for making clothes for a cheap price. It can be hard to choose one as there are so many and you can be ripped off - make sure you're wary due to that. I went to two different tailors, Noon Custom and Bao Diep tailors. I discovered Noon Custom on a whim and Bao Diep was recommended by our hotel.

Phung Hung Ancient House

The ancient houses are renowned in Hoi An and despite their small size, it's a must-have to witness them all and tick off the gorgeous houses from your list. There are a few to pick from but Phung Hung Ancient House was my favourite to explore.

Day 3 - Cycle around the city and a cooking class

Hire a bike and explore

Everyone either rides bikes around Hoi An or they walk, and you can do either. I would recommend, however, hiring a bicycle and spending a morning or afternoon cycling around the town. There's more than meets the eye in the Old Town of Hoi An, including the nearby beach scene. I cycled the bike all the way down to An Bang and the beautiful thing is it doesn't even take too long - and you can spend a while relaxing on the sands.

Coconut Island - cooking class excursion

Cooking classes are a must when you're in Hoi An especially as you travel across Vietnam. Vietnamese cuisine is delicious and intricate and learning how to cook it is a blessing. You can book many cooking courses and excursions from the town and the one we booked from our hotel took us down to Coconut Island. Here, we went for a river tour, learnt about fishing, mooched around the local food market, and then had a cooking class.

The cooking class was amazing as it ended up only being my partner and me, giving us a more intimate experience with the teacher. We cooked a couple of courses and each was insanely good, and I'd love to do it all over again.

Day 4 - Soak up the last bits of Hoi An

Hoi An is one of those places that leave you wanting more and on your last day, I suggest soaking up your favourite bits. Whether you like exploring the market or love a walk along the river, the last day is your chance to admire the town's beauty for the last time.

I hope you've enjoyed this post. When are you planning to go?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-24704668667275924392024-01-02T05:51:00.000-08:002024-01-02T05:51:29.722-08:00Goals for 2024
Well hello to you my reader chums! Happy New Year and hello 2024 - I cannot believe it's the start of another new year. I know I say this every year but the past one swept by incredibly quickly.

I'm really happy with my travels, the memories I made, the accomplishments and life lessons 2023 taught me and I cannot wait to see what 2024 brings. I love setting new goals every year as they give me something to work towards and focus on as the year maps out.

Whether you're thinking of your goals or interested in seeing mine, here are my goals for 2024.

Continue my travel plans

As many of you know, travelling is my favourite thing and I was lucky in 2023 to go backpacking again for three months and on another holiday to Portugal. There are many gorgeous destinations I'd love to see and I have a couple of musts that are on my radar for 2024. I can't wait to explore more countries and tick them off my countries list.

Build up my business

I started my freelancing business in April 2023 and I've loved every minute of building it up. Although it's not all rainbows and fairies, running a business is everything I've ever wanted. In 2024, I'm aiming to build up my business to a more established and retained model. My goal is to build up my retainer clients, I'd love to have a few social media and blogging clients, helping those brands amplify their voices online.

I love working on websites and my other business goal is to book a website project every other month. I enjoy taking a brand's stories and turning them into engaging and user-friendly content online. But mostly, the goal of the business is to keep it going and thriving, learning along the way.

Finish writing my 6th book

I began writing my 6th blog last year and I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience. As a twin, I've always wanted to write a book about twins and for m my 6th I have and this year, I'd like to work towards completing the first draft - and prepare it for editing.

Organise my finances more

As I'm getting older, there are more things I need to save for and I want to settle down to the family way of life and they require stable finances. I'd love to spend more time this year organising my finances and putting the steps in place for a more financially secure future.

Keep up with reading regularly

I certainly got back into the reading habit this year as I got through many books on my backpacking travels. Since then, I've implemented reading into my morning routine and it has kept me on track to getting through some of my to-be-read pile. I love that I've fallen back in love with one of my first passions, reading and I'm excited to dive into more books this year.

Start a podcast

I've wanted to begin a podcast for the longest time as I love the idea of starting conversations online in an audio way. As it has been moving around my mind for a while, I'd love to give it a go this year and see if I can make it happen.

Continue working on my mental health

Caring for my mental health is one of my biggest priorities and incredibly important to me. I've spent the last decade looking and testing for the right coping mechanisms and finding ways to support my mind - and I want to continue that, living a life where I feel content and safe.

Decorate the flat

I've been living at the flat with my partner for over a year now and there were many things I'd like to work on interior-wise. My goal is to work through this list together and create a space that has both of our stamps on it.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post. What are your goals?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-50150761625517381372023-12-29T04:39:00.000-08:002023-12-29T04:39:07.114-08:00Successes and achievements in 2023
Well hello to you my reader chums! 2023 has been one of the best years yet and I'm grateful for all the incredible experiences, achievements and life lessons I've learnt across the way. It started out with the trip of a lifetime backpacking again, launching my business, settling into home life and many moments in between.

As the year ends, I'm in reflection mode and want to share my successes and achievements in 2023.

Backpacking across Asia for 3 months

I've been dreaming of returning to the backpacking way of life and Asia since 2019 and the dream come true this year for a longer time, across 3 months and the blessing of visiting 7 countries. I had the best ever time roaming around Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Indonesia. I still can't believe all the sights I witnessed, the food I ate, the people I met and the memories I made with my partner. It's a dream I think about regularly and wish to relive every single moment.

Falling in love with my new home town

I moved away from home a few months before travelling but didn't get the chance to settle in properly until I returned home from backpacking. Since that point, I've been welcomed with a warm feel by the wonderful local community. My seaside town has plenty going on, from the beach, the sights, the creative community to the calm in the air.

Kickstarting my full-time business

I finally made my dream come true this year by launching my freelancing business, The Violet Network. I'm now a full-time freelance copywriter and social media specialist and I've spent 2023 learning many business lessons and the realities of freelancing life. I've enjoyed every minute, even the harder times of building up the business and the opportunities it has brought me. I can't wait to see what the next year or so brings.

Started writing my 6th book

I'm still trying to figure out how I've already written 5 books and this year, I've started my 6th. I've always wanted to write a book with a twin potline as I have a twin sister and wanted to share my experience through a fictional tale. I've loved working on it and can't wait to develop it further.

My first public speaking gig

Public speaking was always something that terrified me and I really wanted to finally do it, and this year I had the chance. I joined a writing club and part of it was reading out our work in progress - and I did it, I read a book I've written in front of a room of people.

Building a community around me

Moving to a new town, I dealt with a lot of adjustments getting used to my new surroundings and meeting new people. However, I've managed to attract the most amazing community of people in my town, made loads of new friends and adapted my relationships with home friends which are still thriving.

Living with my partner

I moved in with my partner a couple months before we went backpacking together and I didn't get to fully embrace how much I loved it. This year when we returned home, I fell in love with having our own place, living in each other's pockets and doing life with each other - and I'm forever grateful for that.

What a year! There have been a million other successes and achievements over the past year that I'm grateful for. I’ve seen the book ‘My Policeman’ everywhere especially as it was made into a film last year and I wanted to see what the hype was about.

If you’re looking for a book about forbidden love, here’s my full review of My Policeman by Bethan Roberts.

Plotline

Set in 1950s Brighton, the plot follows Marion when she first meets Tom and is completely smitten, convinced their love will be enough for both of them. A few years later, Patrick meets Tom and is in awe of him straight away. Tom is their policeman and in the time of the 1950s, it’s safer for Tom to marry Marion. The two lovers have to share him until someone breaks and their lives are destroyed.

Characters and relationships

The plot is told from Marion's and Patrick’s perspectives, flipping between the two helping you understand their true feelings.

Marion is a strong-willed woman with set opinions and an intelligent mind, and I love her attitude. Working as a school teacher and with the ambition to thrive in her career, she’s already defying the odds of what a woman should be like in the 1950s. Her love for Tom is precious, endearing and obsessive. She falls in love with him from the first minute she sees him and it grows with time as she develops into a woman. I enjoyed how Marion describes her everyday life including her relationship with honesty, making her more relatable and likeable as a character.

Patrick is a unique character with a sophisticated flare and an obsessive attitude toward love. He’s an artist and has that stereotypical personality of a creative, liking the finer things in life, and being cultured in the way of art, opera, literature and music. His prestigious personality is intriguing with the need and wants to understand him better. Patrick is also brave, sticking to being who he is in a time when such things are forbidden.

Tom as a character is misunderstood, and weighed down by caring more for others' opinions than living a life he knows he truly wants, even if it’s forbidden. He’s loyal with a hard-working attitude and needs to impress those around him. My heart went out to Tom as I could see how much he would have loved to live his truth and couldn’t.

The relationships in this book are intense for different reasons. Marion and Tom’s because essentially, it’s a lie. Marion’s love carries that relationship and she adores every inch of him that her desperation hides Tom’s true feelings. Patrick and Tom’s relationship, on the other hand, are mutually passionate and obsessive, however, Patrick more than Tom in a sense, is more open to the risky side of their being together. Patrick and Marion’s relationship grows to be intense once she understands what’s really going on.

Overall thoughts

Overall, I liked this book and can see why it’s raved about by many. Initially, it took me a while to get into it and understand whose perspective was being told. However, once I was hooked on the characters and their story, I was intrigued and also saddened. It’s heartbreaking reading a story of forbidden love due to societal views in what seems to be a modern time.

The book overall is eye-opening, heartbreaking and insightful of what love can mean in a time when it isn’t allowed to be expressed.

Ending

As the book went on, I wasn’t exactly sure how it was going to end, there weren’t any hints or expectations. However, the ending to the book was a content one, with a heartbreaking feel like the rest of the novel.

I hope you enjoyed this review. What are you currently reading?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-13743425574120945222023-12-18T09:43:00.000-08:002023-12-18T09:43:39.325-08:00Boosting your mood in the winter months - my best tips
Well hello to you my reader chums! Cold season has arrived which means darker nights, shorter days and the lead-up to Christmas. I'm going to admit, I struggle immensely during this time of year with the freezing mornings and dreary atmosphere. I'm a summer baby and thrive in hot weather, with blue skies and a peppy atmosphere.

If you're someone who struggles with seasonal depression or low mood in the cold weather, here are my best tips to boost your mood in the winter months.

Get outside for a walk a day

With limited daylight hours, it's more important than ever to make the most of the daylight when it's there. Whether that's just popping outside for ten minutes or an hour, going for a walk a day will do you wonders. I prefer this either first thing in the morning or during my afternoon slump to give me the boost I need for the rest of the day.

Stay social with friends and families

It's incredibly easy to go into hibernation mode in the winter months, especially if you're an introvert like me. Due to this, staying social is key to helping you feel part of the community. Try and make plans with friends and family, whether that's popping around someone's house for dinner, planning a games night or a day out somewhere. Whatever the plan, implementing social situations can boost your mood as you can bounce off people's energy.

Keep to your usual routine

I know it's hard to stick to a routine when it's dreary outside, however, I find a usual routine keeps me feeling much better. Even if you wake up later, keep to that morning routine and night routine. For me, it's waking up and reading a chapter or two of my book and then doing some form of exercise before breakfast. It really helps to start my day on a high.

Treat yourself with kindness

Beating yourself up is a lot easier when you're feeling glum or down due to the weather. This is why something like a positivity log is helpful, using affirmations or treating yourself to something that makes you happy, will boost you up. You can also set boundaries, talk kinder to yourself and give yourself more breaks to help with this.

Eat nutritionally-heavy food

Diet and what you eat really can change how you feel. I'm not going to advise you on what to eat, however, what I would say is to eat the foods which make your mind and body feel good. Whatever these foods are, introduce more into your diet for this period.

Doing something you love every day

Filling your day with positivity and joy can help boost your mood immensely and doing something you love every day helps. Whether it's reading a book, baking a cake, doing a yoga class or having a film night, whatever the activity, ensure it's something that makes you happy.

Ensure you're getting enough vitamin D intake

The problem with the winter months is the lack of sunlight and therefore, the lack of vitamin D. During this time, ensuring you get enough vitamin D is crucial. This could be by getting sunlight where possible, taking quality vitamin D supplements or eating more foods rich in the vitamin.

Find a form of exercise that works for you

Exercise does wonders for my mental health, especially during the winter months. Every person likes different types of exercise to boost their mood. For example, I like to go running (weather dependent), pilates, yoga and walks.

I hope you enjoyed this post. What other tips would you add?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-59632701706667254522023-12-14T08:54:00.000-08:002023-12-14T08:54:56.106-08:00Mai Chau, Vietnam: everything to know before visiting
Well hello to you my reader chums! I fell in love with Mai Chau as soon as I arrived. It's a quaint village located in northern Vietnam, renowned for endless rice fields and a wholesome, nature appeal. There isn't much going on but that's the beauty of it, an opportunity for peace.

If you're planning a trip to Mai Chau, here's my guide to everything you should know about visiting Mai Chau in Vietnam.

It's completely residential

Mai Chau is a village that is mainly filled with locals. You're essentially staying in a residential hub of those who work on the rice fields and because of that, don't expect an over 'tourist' appeal. The village is gorgeous and the perfect opportunity to switch off and just be. As it is pretty rural, don't expect attractions everywhere, just pure wonders of natural rice fields.

Restaurant options are limited

I'm not sure if it's the time we visited or what, but the restaurant scene wasn't massive. I'm talking a handful of restaurants around to choose from and that's why I ended up dining in the homestay, my partner and I were staying at.

Enjoy homestay living

Speaking of homestays, expect those in the bucket load here as it's the main form of accommodation with many to choose from. And, a chance to enjoy countryside views and live with the locals, learning more about them and their culture. I loved my Mai Chau homestay, it was a quaint cabin with a balcony, overlooking the rice fields.

Rice fields change throughout the year

The rice fields change depending on the season and the weather. In springtime (March to May) and autumn (September to November), the rice fields turn a golden-yellow colour before harvesting. Whilst, for the classic green rice fields, February and August is the optimum time to witness this. I visited in February and was blessed with gorgeous green rice fields - a sight I'm still not over.

Hiring a bicycle is the best way to get around

Cycling around picturesque green rice fields on a bike is an experience like no other. If you want to explore the village and beyond, hiring a bike is key and what most visitors do to see the natural sights and get a taste of village life.

Spring and autumn have the best weather

The weather changes and can influence when you'd like to visit. The spring and autumn months have the best weather as it's mild and warm. The summer season is monsoon/rainy season and floods are known to create havoc on the roads. Wintertime is pleasant enough in terms of temperatures but gets cooler at night so it's important to bring layers.

You can reach Mai Chau by bus from Hanoi

Mai Chau is easily reachable from Hanoi and buses are pretty regular. As it only takes around three and a bit hours, you can leave early morning and arrive by lunchtime.

I hope you enjoyed this post. When are you planning to visit?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-71140836362151316532023-12-13T11:26:00.000-08:002023-12-13T11:26:16.434-08:00How to Choose an Adventurous New Hobby | AD
Well hello to you my reader chums! While a lot of work might not make you dull or less sharp at your job, a lack of downtime does not encourage a healthy work-life balance. This is why you should always have hobbies that you love and are ready to jump into at any given time.

By taking the time to enjoy recreational activities you are actually setting yourself up for more success in your freelancing adventures, business journey, or just as an employee. If you like a bit of adventure in your downtime then here are some hobbies you need to try.

Get On Your High Horse

One of the first things that you need to try out is polo. Maybe you have never heard of this sport before or maybe you have but have never thought that this could be for you.

Climbing up on horseback may be something that you find yourself gravitating towards after you have tried it.

This sport is called the Sport of Kings in part for its gallantry. Get an excellent horseback ride and learn some equestrian skills while you chase after a ball. Polo is also a uniform sport so if you get on a team you will have gorgeous Polo team shirts given to you.

If adventure is your middle name then you can't afford to miss this one.

Jump About With Parkour

Parkour is one of those heart-pounding sports that is rated Grade A for adventure. You'll be vaulting, leaping, and flipping on the landscape with this sport.

If you like a lot of physical activity then this is definitely something that you should consider.

Getting around obstacles becomes an art form for those who love this sport. You can blend athleticism with horses.

Trampoline Dodgeball

If you've never heard of this unusual adventure then you are not alone. Many people haven't. However, it's worth it for you to take a deep dive into this unique world of us sporting and hobbying.

You're going to be placed in a room full of trampolines, after which you will start bouncing and dodging balls to your opponent's throw at you.

Underwater Hockey

Get your feet wet with underwater hockey. You're going to get quite a rush when you try out this sport. Of course, since humans are not fish you're going to need some equipment to go underwater.

Masks and snorkels as well as a small stick should help you navigate your way around the underwater with this sport. This is all you need to get going and you are sure to enjoy all the time when you are practicing this sport.

If you're ready to take on a brand new hobby that is going to see you tackling adventures and having something to talk with your friends about, then any of the three hobbies that have been described here may be just what you are looking for. Always do your research into each of them before you select one you think is right for you.

Thank you for reading <3

Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-26232436796781563512023-12-11T09:45:00.000-08:002023-12-11T09:45:03.582-08:00Lessons I've learned about growing a business as a freelancer
Well hello to you my reader chums! I love being a freelancer; it has its pros and cons but it's exciting and the best decision I've ever made. I went full-time freelance this year in April and within these 8 months, I've learnt a lot about how to build a business, develop my craft and made many mistakes along the way.

Freelancing is hard graft, it's challenging like any other business, however, it has taught me resilience, confidence and assurance that I can do it. If you're new to freelancing, here are the lessons I've learned about growing a business as a freelancer.

Networking is key

It's always about who you know, not what you do and networking is a great example of that. To build clientele, learn who is in the industry and gain confidence with others, networking truly is key. I've loved how I've put myself out there with networking as the thought of it did terrify me. However, the more I did it, the more I began to enjoy it and reap the rewards.

Networking, whether it's virtually or in person, meeting new people benefits you when finding new work and can build up your referrals. It also helps with learning from others and you can ask for help with any business issues you have from like-minded individuals.

Freelancing is hard work

I knew starting a business would be hard and building up clientele. However, I didn't quite grasp the graft that freelancing takes. If I'm not looking for work, I'm doing the client work. Then there's also the admin aspect, marketing, networking and constantly following up to create and retain business. It can be hard to switch off but the benefits and rewards outweigh the work you put in.

High and low periods are normal

I had an idea about how up and down freelancing would be before I started but I realised it when I launched. Some months, I can be very busy and other months, things can be the complete opposite - and that's normal. It's all about embracing the waves, planning accordingly and enjoying the process. In the high periods, I'm exceptionally organised and thrive on my work, whilst during the quiet, I work on my marketing, admin and networking.

Failure is normal

Failure is all part of the learning process. If you don't fail, how will you succeed? With business, you need to make mistakes and take risks, otherwise, you're not going to thrive or make waves in what you do. If you fail, it doesn't mean you should give up. It means you should try again but try it differently. Accept failure and take it in your strive. It doesn't mean your business won't do well.

Learning is a positive thing

The best thing you can do as a business owner is learn. Learning should never stop, whether it's online training or meeting other people, you will always be learning. Ensure as a business owner, you embrace the learning as much as you can and know, it's never a waste of time or resources.

Marketing is crucial to business growth

I've worked in marketing all my adult life and it's what I specialise in as a freelance copywriter and social media specialist. With that in mind, I know the power of marketing and doing it effectively. Don't miss out on investing time and money in marketing as it'll help your business stand out and build your brand awareness.

Running my own business is everything I ever wanted

I've dreamed of being my own boss for as long as I can remember. Now, I'm my own boss, I can live my life on my terms, choosing my schedule and picking who I want to work with. I can align my life with my values and overall dreams.

A support system is everything

As freelancing is hard, having a support system around me has done wonders when I'm struggling with the quiet periods. I'm forever grateful to my family, friends and partner for their encouragement, love and support.

I hope you enjoyed this post. I've backpacked on two occasions, once in 2019 and again, earlier this year. During those periods, I travelled for two months and three months and each trip taught me loads about myself, how I travel and what I love about the world.

If you're considering going backpacking for the first time or planning your trip, here's my guide to first-time advice for backpackers.

Don't overpack

You'll be carrying your backpack around the entire duration of your trip and the last thing you'll want is something to weigh you down too much. I always say, pack what you think you need and then half it. When it comes to clothes and toiletries, you can buy more when you're out there. Plus, the weather is incredibly hot, so you won't need to wear a lot. Backpacking isn't a fashion show, you don't need fancy clothes, and you should pack lightweight layers, which are practical and easy to wear for every occasion, and weather. Trust me, a lot of your clothes will get ruined!

Always overcompensate with budget - and have a safety net

South East Asia is cheap, that's why it attracts a large amount of backpackers every single year. Although, despite the cheap price of everything, you want to overprepare just in case. Whether you find an expensive excursion when you're roaming around, you see a souvenir you fall in love or you want to treat yourself to a posher restaurant. On the flip side, you never know what expenses will show up, such as getting in an accident, losing money or getting scammed. You can't plan for the unexpected and that's why it's good to overcompensate so you'll have the budget to cover it.

Buy travel insurance

Similar to overcompensating with money, you want to be prepared for the unexpected and that's where travel insurance comes in. Travel insurance is essential for medical needs abroad and anything else you need to be covered, such as cancellation of the trip or any outdoor activities you are thinking of going on. Travel insurance will help cover you for any instances or things that don't go to plan, saving you loads of money to shell out at that moment.

Have cash on you always

South East Asia is renowned for using cash for all payments, such as restaurants, cafes, transport and souvenirs. Due to this, don't expect to show up and pay for everything with a card. Always have cash on hand, or load all your money on a travel card/bank card and take it out in one of the local ATMS.

Research the 'dos' and 'dont's' of your destination's culture

Every destination has different rules and cultural norms and it's important to be respectful when you jet off somewhere new. Do all the necessary research when it comes to societal norms to ensure you're respectful of the location and the people. This could be covering up in temples or not breaking any laws of the land.

Prepare for the weather seasons

The seasons are wildly different, from dry to wet and it's important to prepare for both. Dry seasons mean it's hotter and you need to be packed and prepped for that. Whilst wetter seasons, you'll likely experience more dangerous weather situations and a lot more rain. This means packing waterproofs and layers and being mentally prepared for not having picture-perfect weather every day. Also, different countries in South East Asia have different seasons so also be aware of that.

Learn the scams of the land

As backpacking is incredibly common across South East Asia, scams are rife for tourists. Common scams are widely written about online and you should spend time researching what could happen where you're going. For instance, if you don't set a price at the beginning of a tuk-tuk ride, the driver may charge you a lot more.

Get used to haggling

Haggling is key to getting the most out of your money in Southeast Asia and why you need to learn how to do it best. You'll be haggling when it comes to markets and tuk-tuk rides and sometimes in souvenir shops too - be alert and be the way to get the best price.

Book the appropriate vaccines

Your health is the most important thing, especially when you're travelling as it's that level of health which will keep you going. Before you travel long-term, speak to your doctors about the appropriate vaccines you need. Depending on where you live and your doctors, some vaccines may be free whilst others you may have to pay for. On my first trip, my vaccines were free but on the second trip, I paid around £400 for vaccines as I went to more rural destinations.

Go with an open mind

The beautiful part of backpacking around South East Asia is everything you'll learn along the way, the unique experiences, delicious food and welcoming people. It's probably one of the best experiences you can have and the perfect opportunity to be open-minded. You never know who you'll meet or what you'll experience along the way.

I hope you enjoyed this post. When are you planning this trip?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-38349905597346922252023-11-29T09:07:00.000-08:002023-11-29T09:07:01.704-08:00Dealing with the quieter periods as a freelancer
Well hello to you my reader chums! Freelancing is HARD. It's an up-and-down road for sure and getting used to that wave is all part of being a freelancer. I have to admit, this wave is something I struggle with, especially the quieter periods.

If you're new to freelancing or struggling with your mental health, here is my advice on dealing with the quieter periods as a freelancer.

Focus on the admin side of your business

Freelancing is a blessing and a curse as it's forever either busy or quiet. With that in mind, in busy periods, it can be harder to deal with the admin side of your business. Whether that's emailing, following up on invoices, updating your website or organising your calendar, these tasks are tedious but great to do during quieter periods.

Work on your website/update your portfolio

Your website and portfolio showcase who you are, what you offer and the quality of your work. For all prospective clients, they want to know this information and why it's crucial to ensure it's up to date. This means adding all new projects to your portfolio and keeping your website updated with relevant prices and information.

Delve into passion projects

I love a passion project as it really helps boost my creativity and spark my imagination, which in turn, benefits my work. Passion projects can be whatever you want them to be and a focus which will take you away from work but also give you a focus when things are quiet. My passion projects include this blog and my novels.

Work on the marketing for your business

Marketing is key to helping build your personal brand and grow your online presence. In the quieter periods, this is the time to work on your marketing. Whether that's setting up an email marketing newsletter, mapping out your monthly social media content or writing blog posts. Whatever your marketing strategy is utilise this time to enforce working on it.

Pitch/search for new clients and work

Looking for work is difficult and tedious especially when a project comes to a close unexpectedly. Utilise this time to search for new clients and work. This could be pitching for a company you love, reaching out on LinkedIn or searching on freelancer-type websites.

Go to networking events

Networking I found is one of the best ways to meet new potential clients, learn who is in your industry and grow your skills. Plan more networking events during the quieter times as you'll have more time and energy to focus on speaking with others.

Revisit and update your positivity log

In the quieter periods, for me, self-doubt hits like a tonne of bricks. At this time, you should (if you haven't already) create a positivity log and revisit it this time. This log should include any feedback you've had from a personal and professional perspective.

I hope you enjoy this post. What else would you add?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-45070651822405757612023-11-23T09:25:00.000-08:002023-11-23T09:25:44.462-08:00Book review: The Write Way To Die by Jo Bavington-Jones
Well hello you my reader chums! I'm a big murder mystery nerd and especially love it when a book is set somewhere local. My partner got me this book and I was very intrigued by the title and how it was about a writing group, and from an author I hadn't heard before.

If you're a fan of dark humour, and honesty and are a writer yourself, you will love The Write Way To Die by Jo Bavington-Jones - and here is my full review.

Plotline

The plot is about Amy who leaves her job at the vets to pursue her writing career. When one of the customers, Jenny comes in one day and mentions she's a writer too, she invites Amy to join her writing group. There she meets many like-minded writers and every week they have the opportunity to share ideas with each other. When the pandemic happens, their weekly meetings are moved virtually and they begin exchanging their murder stories, for everyone to enjoy and critique. Each story has a different tone to it and when it gets to Robert's story, his story is the darkest of them all, with the aim to make a killer nickname for himself.

Characters and relationships

The protagonist Amy is a brilliantly written character of a truly honest woman, who is unapologetically herself - and that's why she was really great to read about. I love how she dared to walk away from her job and pursue her writing dream, even if she struggled in the process. Her obsession with chocolate oranges made me laugh as she was even more relatable. She was typically British in every way and the perfect protagonist for a novel like this.

Amy's best friend Cameron had to be one of my favourite characters because he seemed like someone who always knew how to have fun and bring joy. I loved their relationship as it was real and honest, and how every good friendship should be. It's one of those friendships that shows you can meet a good friend at work and continue that friendship.

My favourite friendship though had to be between Amy and Jenny because as the plot goes on, you see how it blooms along the way and gets stronger. Whereas with Amy and Cameron, their friendship had already been built if that makes sense. I love that they shared their passion for writing and were essentially the leaders of the writing group.

Overall thoughts

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and its concept. Initially, when I began reading it, I wasn't sure what to make of it as it seemed quite slow-paced and focused more on the character development side of things. However, as the book continued and the different stories were shared of all the fiction murders, I was hooked, reading all the different perspectives. It's one of those books where you need to sink into it for a while and learn the context before you can fully appreciate it - and then you will love it!

I loved the writing style of the author and how it was honest, simple and as if the protagonist was just sharing her thoughts. Also, I enjoyed how she was able to change perspectives based on whose story she was telling - a very clever addition to the novel.

Ending

The book gets darker and darker in a comical sense from the middle to the end and I wasn't sure how it was going to end. Sometimes with a book, you get an inkling of how it would end and even though I had an idea of what would happen, I didn't think that would be the ending of the book. It ended in such a dramatic way and completely threw me off guard but that's what I love about this novel, it was very unexpected in many parts of the plot.

I hope you enjoyed this post. What book are you currently reading?

Thank you for reading <3
Della Driscollhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02583416619253611952noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-989139441255206754.post-30668721387629700722023-11-17T12:51:00.000-08:002023-11-17T12:51:34.836-08:00How to deal with the pressure in your late twenties
Well hello to you my reader chums! Turning 27 this year, I definitely felt the weight of that pressure that I'm now in my late twenties and the comparison of everyone's lives. It's weird how much everything changes from your early twenties to mid-twenties and late twenties, regarding people's expectations, your own expectations and the pressure to have it all.

There have been many moments this year where I've had the '27 panic'. I'm not entirely sure if it's a common thing but I've heard that 27 is a make-or-break year and I can see why. If you're in your late twenties and feeling like you're not where you're meant to be, here is how to deal with the pressure in your late twenties.

Focus on what you have achieved

In times of self-loathing and picking all the negative things about yourself, you need to refocus on the positive things. These include your personal achievements, who you are what you've achieved. We all have different achievements and you should be proud of what yours are. When I look back, I'm shocked about everything I've done in my twenties; the endless travelling, running two businesses, writing five books, building a marketing career, and a lot of personal growth - it has been a wild road.

Remind yourself that everyone has different priorities and goals

Nobody is the same, that's the beautiful thing about life and the human race. We were born to be different and lead unique lives from each other, that's how we all gain perspective. With that in mind, everyone is different when it comes to achieving goals and reaching the typical milestones society tells us to do in our twenties. You don't need to have achieved everything by this moment and for those who have bought a house or had kids, you've still got time to do that, focus on what you've done and know, they're on a different timeline.

Know that your twenties are incredibly young

I keep having to remind myself that being in your twenties is YOUNG. Why does society tell us we need to do everything in our twenties? Whether that's travel, getting married, having kids or investing. Your twenties is the decade to start figuring out who you are and what adulting is. The decision-making part in your brain doesn't form until you're 25 so why should you need to make any big life-altering decisions before then?

Avoid the social media doom scroll

Social media is toxic in so many ways but especially for comparison. I'm easily swayed when I see someone else doing all these amazing things and almost forget social media is a highlight reel. It's only showing the finished products of achievements, not all the sacrifices and the hard work that went into it.

Know, you don't need to rush - everything comes with time

Stop rushing. Take a step back and enjoy the moment, enjoy the process for that matter. The best things come in time and so should the goals you want to achieve. It feels a little more accomplished knowing you waited and worked hard, rather than rushing everything and feeling stressed. The final product is great but the journeys are what the stories are for - don't forget about the journey as you're too focused on the end goal.

Set attainable goals

The pressure can lead you to think up goals you're unlikely to achieve, creating even more pressure and stress. It's important to set attainable goals for where you are at in life, your income and for what you actually want to achieve (not what society tells you).

Stop comparing yourself to your parents and grandparents

The generations before us used to do everything at a much younger age but that's because times were different, expectations were different, ambitions were different and the economy was different. There's no point in comparing as circumstances were different and you can only work as necessary to achieve your goals in this timeline, not the past.

Your twenties are your first years of adulthood

I saw this video recently which said, age 18 is your year one at adulthood which means in your twenties, you're only a couple of years old in your adult years and it's true. You're living the adult world for the first time, away from the comfort of your parent's direction, earning adult money for the first time and having responsibilities. You're not meant to get this right, you're meant to fail, learn and pick yourself up again.

I hope you enjoyed this post. I'm obsessed with Vietnam; I've been twice and I'm completely and utterly in love with the country. I dream of going back all the time as it's such a wonderful place, packed with the BEST food, gorgeous sights, lovely people and a friendly feel.

You can travel to Vietnam for a shorter or longer period, however, 2 weeks gives you enough time to immerse in the culture and explore some of the country's best sights. If you're planning a visit to Vietnam, here is my 2-week itinerary to Vietnam.

3 days in Hanoi

As the capital city, Hanoi is a bustling environment everyone should experience. I love the buzz of Hanoi; the endless traffic, crowds of people, cool coffee shop scene and historic sights are everything to get a glimpse of city life in Hanoi. The famous sights include the Vietnamese Women’s Museum, Train Street, Hoa Lo Prison and Hoan Kiem Lake, as well as trying a classic Egg Coffee.

1 night in Mai Chau

Escape the taste of city air and head to the quaint, rural village of Mai Chau. Many visitors want to see the rice fields in Vietnam and you should too. Most travellers opt for Sapa Valley, however, during my time, it was too early in the season to see the Valley which is why I went to Mai Chau. And, I'm super happy I did. This village is traditional and rural, ideal for a night away in the country air. I booked a cabin which overlooked the rice fields and it was a dream to see and spend the day cycling around the village.

2 days in Ninh Binh

Ninh Binh is another destination which is growing in popularity and features the most gorgeous nature scene with caves, nature reserves and endless seas of greenery. Over two days, you can spend your time visiting the ancient capital of Hoa Lu and exploring the attractions in Tam Coc, from the pagodas, and rugged limestone cliffs to boat rides on the river.

2 days in Cat Ba Island - and a day trip to Ha Long Bay

Coastal life is calling your name on Cat Ba Island and the perfect spot to take a day trip to Ha Long Bay. You can do the day trip from Hanoi, however, it takes a lot more travelling within the space of a day than is necessary. Whereas in Cat Ba Island, you can experience the beach scene of the actual island and book your trip to Ha Long Bay.

2 days in Da Nang

Da Nang is another beautiful and modern city with plenty of attractions to fill your two days with. From strolling along the stunning My Khe Beach to a theme park day at SunWorld Resort in Ba Na Hills, seeing the Golden Hands Bridge and the Marble Mountains.

3/4 days in Hoi An

The last stop on your list is the charming Hoi An. I adored Hoi An; the endless bicycles, the ancient look and the quirky cafes, restaurants and shops. Plus the art scene and wonderful lanterns across the river are a vision to witness. Hoi An isn't massive, however, it's a great base to roam around, take things slowly and book any excursions, such as a cooking class.

I hope you enjoyed this post.
